Our Community

Creating positive environmental and social impact at a local level.

Our work is linked to the communities around our facilities and the customers we serve. Food waste recycling is not just about waste management, it’s about creating positive environmental and social impact at a local level.

We believe that surplus food should be prioritised for people. We encourage customers to collaborate with charities for redistribution before considering recycling. We recognise the food waste hierarchy and do not compete with animal feed markets for suitable materials. Recycling should only address unavoidable waste, not edible surplus.

Our facilities operate within local communities, providing skilled jobs and supporting regional economies. From plant operators and drivers to customer support teams, our people live and work in the areas we serve. Wherever possible, we prioritise working with local suppliers and service partners, helping to keep investment and opportunity within the regional economy.

Developing future talent

Developing future talent

We are committed to developing future talent through apprenticeship opportunities across our operations. These programmes provide practical experience in engineering, operations, and logistics, helping people build long-term careers in the renewable energy and food waste recycling sectors. Many of our apprentices come from the communities around our sites, creating opportunities locally while strengthening skills within the industry.

Supporting the next generation to understand sustainability is equally important. Through school visits, facility tours, and educational engagement, we help students learn how food waste can be turned into renewable energy and biofertiliser. Seeing the process first-hand helps bring environmental education to life.

Creating Positive Impact in Every Community We Serve

Our community involvement extends beyond our facilities. Members of our team have supported local initiatives, including volunteering with community and charitable organisations such as homeless shelters. We also provide financial support to local initiatives and community causes when we can, contributing to recovery efforts and community projects as needed.

Food waste collected from local businesses is returned to productive use. The digestate produced through anaerobic digestion is used as a nutrient-rich fertiliser on farmland, supporting local agriculture and helping return nutrients to the soil. This creates a circular system in which food waste contributes to food production.

For ReFood, community is not a side initiative; it is part of how we operate every day, linking environmental responsibility with positive local impact.

Making a change, one collection at a time.

  • The concept was straightforward and simple. Very easy, and in the 5-years we've worked with them, it's been fantastic.

    Nuno Cesar De Sa

    Hotel Manager, Rudding Park

  • ReFood was great, setting us up with our regular collections and sorting us out with an ideal solution for our needs. The collections are reliable, and it's great to know our waste produce is being given a new life as a greener energy source.

    Matthew

    Operations Manager, York Coffee Emporium

  • Having used this service now for 6 weeks, I have to say we've been very happy with ReFood. Ebony had handled all administrative aspects perfectly, and the collection of bins has been faultless.

    Jon Smithells

Six Poor Folk, Cafe Bar Bistro

  • The service so far has been efficient. Good communication, as a busy cafe when food waste comes back you don't feel as bad knowing that it's getting recycled.
