Fruit Supply Waste Collection, UK
How fruitful office reduced food waste through anaerobic digestion.
Fruitful Office is a nationwide office fruit supplier dedicated to improving workplace wellbeing through access to fresh, seasonal produce. Alongside its focus on nutrition and employee engagement, the company has built a strong reputation for environmental responsibility.
Its sustainability measures include using 99% recyclable or biodegradable packaging, operating a growing number of electric delivery vehicles, and achieving a 92.1% overall waste reuse or recycling rate. The company also supports global environmental initiatives by planting a fruit tree in Malawi for every basket delivered.
The Challenge
Maintaining high product quality and reliable supply requires forward purchasing and strict quality checks. While this ensures customer satisfaction, it inevitably creates a level of surplus fruit each week.
Fruitful Office prioritised redistribution wherever possible, donating edible surplus to food charities such as FareShare and The Real Junk Food Project. However, a small proportion of fruit, typically damaged or spoiled, remained unsuitable for human consumption.
To meet its zero-waste ambitions and avoid landfill disposal, the company needed a sustainable outlet for this unavoidable waste.
The Solution
Fruitful Office partnered with ReFood to introduce a structured food waste recycling process. Spoiled or damaged fruit is collected by specialist vehicles and transported to ReFood's Dagenham facility, where it undergoes anaerobic digestion (AD). This process breaks down organic material to produce:
- Biogas is used to generate renewable electricity or upgraded for injection into the gas grid.
- PAS110-certified digestate, used as a nutrient-rich fertiliser in agriculture.
This approach ensures that unavoidable food waste is converted into valuable resources rather than being discarded.
The partnership was designed to integrate smoothly into Fruitful Office's existing operations. Regular collections and a tailored service model enabled the business to separate and divert waste efficiently without disrupting day-to-day logistics. The system's simplicity enabled food waste recycling to become routine rather than an additional burden.
Our impact and the next steps.
Fruitful Office continues to build on this progress as part of its broader environmental commitments. The company views anaerobic digestion as a key component in eliminating unavoidable food waste while supporting renewable energy and agricultural sustainability.
This case highlights how businesses handling fresh produce can adopt practical solutions to reduce waste and deliver measurable environmental benefits.
